I was contacted by a Geriatric
Care Manager about the challenges that one of her clients was
experiencing with her finances. The bills had not been
paid in many months and this came to light when the phones were
shut off by Verizon. The phones served a critical role
since he was wearing a monitor that was hooked up to the phone
in the event of an emergency.
The client has
dementia associated with Alzheimers disease and his children
reside out of state, hundreds of miles away. After
discussions with all the involved parties (children and care
managers) I visited the client on short notice. It became obvious
rather quickly that his
affairs had been neglected primarily due to his lack of desire
to have anything to do with his bills. The client was a
successful Certified Public Accountant for over fifty years.
Damage control became priority number one.
But one of the first challenges was
convincing him to sign the checks for all the outstanding bills,
since there was no power of attorney involved on the checking
account due to the immediate need. Lost credit cards, a
companion taking advantage of him (and stealing his money), and
continuing decline in mental capacity presented additional
challenges.
As we fast forward a few months and things
have stabilized and running smoothly from a bill-paying and
financial perspective. Guardianship proceedings have commenced
to protect the interests of the client and aides are now
situated in the home as a result of the diminished capacity.
Our payroll service is now being utilized and our ability to
shield the family from the day to day financial issues has
proven its value.
Call us up and ask us how we can be of service
to you. And if you want, we'll give you the contact
information on behalf of this client, whose children have
graciously agreed to be references for us.
